Week One

I went into week one wondering what I have gotten myself into and asking myself was this really for me and then I read some of the introductions from the other students and their backgrounds in IT or website design etc and I was ready to run, and run fast at that. I was left thinking I am not cut out for this I have no background in web communications, bar the use of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Email.

I decided it was best to listen to the lecture and read some of the material and I came to realise it does not matter that I do not know any of that, I am however really keen in finding out as much as I can.

I this week was a fairly easy week, just getting used to the boards, finding out where to find all the important information like when assignments are due.

We also had to think about who we are online and what kind of media we create. Up until those questions were raised I had never given it a thought about who I was online, as far as I was concerned I was nobody. But I have since released that once it something is posted to the World Wide Web it can never be deleted. I use Facebook a lot, updating my status, posting photos & watching amusing clips on Youtube as well as sending a multitude of emails.

One thing I love is how much it is getting me thinking and questioning.

I have come to realise though, I am not going to get anywhere if I procrastinate, I need to workout a study plan and stick to it otherwise I will fall behind fast seeing as this isn’t my only subject this study period.

What’s in a name?

Usernames, up until now I had never really given much thought into my usernames, as they were hardly ever the same for each site, I guess that was more to do with keeping my anonymity then trying to create an online personae. However I have now joined up with

All with the same user name of jodicam. Which isn’t very creative or funny, it’s just a shorten version of my name.

WordPress I couldn’t use jodicam, whilst I had never heard of WordPress before it appears it is quite popular which meant trying to come up with alternate username that still had elements of jodicam in it was harder then I thought it would be. In the end I ended up with jodicampbell as the username, not very clever, funny or intelligent.

What is the Internet?

Did you know that the INTERNET & the WORLD WIDE WEB are not one in the same?
I for one did not know that, it turns out they work together but they are not the same thing.
This is how I see it:
The Internet is the infrastructure, in that you would have – the computers, phones and other electronic devices which are networked together and can be accessed by anyone, anywhere, anytime.
The World Wide Web is an application in which brings the Internet to life, it runs on top of the Internet.
Isn’t it fascinating what we just take for granted, I assumed the Internet was the World Wide Web. That it was just different ways of saying the same thing, it never occurred to me they would have different meanings let alone different purposes.
